Dr. Eun received his advanced training in robotic urologic surgery at the center where these techniques were first developed and at the time when they were first emerging. At Detroit's Vattikuti Urology Institute, his team helped set the new standards for these novel minimally invasive methods. He personally assisted in or performed about 1300 robotic surgeries during his residency and fellowship at the Henry Ford Hospital. In 2008, Dr. Eun was recruited to the University of Pennsylvania where he helped build their comprehensive and advanced robotic urologic surgery program.
Dr. Eun is now considered a leading authority in complex minimally invasive surgeries involving cancer-related and reconstructive surgeries of the prostate, kidney, ureter, bladder, adrenal and testis. He currently has one of the busiest kidney surgery and partial nephrectomy practices in the world. He offers high-risk patients, many referred from outside the region, novel procedures that avoid the problems associated with traditional open surgery. He routinely evaluates and operates on complicated patients that are typically offered limited or no surgical options. Using these innovative methods, Dr. Eun performs a high volume of robotic procedures for a wide variety of indications, including patients who have had prior surgeries, prior radiation/chemotherapy, are morbidly obese and are Jehovah's Witnesses.
Today, Dr. Eun routinely employs the surgical robot to perform: radical and simple prostatectomy, post surgical and radiation failure prostatectomy, radical and partial cystectomy, anterior exenteration, extended pelvic lymph node dissections, bladder diverticulectomy, sacrocolpopexy, ureteral reimplant/repair, ureterolysis, uretero-pelvic junction repair, total and partial nephrectomy, nephroureterectomy, pyelolithotomy, ureterolithotomy, total and partial adrenalectomy and retroperitoneal lymph node dissection.
Dr. Eun remains extremely active in research and development related to robotic urologic oncology—especially outcomes measurement, guideline development, instrument and device design, and refinement of new clinical applications and novel techniques for the most challenging patients. He has trained and taught dozens of residents, fellows, and private practice and academic urologists. He has lectured, operated and presented his data worldwide, and published over 30 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and presented over 60 research abstracts.
