Nephrology
The Section of Nephrology, founded in the early 1960s, provides services not only to the North Philadelphia community but also has evolved into a major regional and national referral center. There are currently nine full-time faculty members, all of whom participate in the section's various clinical, educational and research programs based at Temple University Hospital. The hospital is a 500-bed tertiary care facility housing nationally acclaimed programs in critical care, emergency medicine, multi-organ transplantation, cardiovascular surgery and pulmonary medicine.
The Section provides the highest level of diagnostic and therapeutic programs in acute and chronic renal disease and electrolyte disorders using renal biopsies and various state-of-the-art modalities of renal replacement therapy and transplantation. Besides our in-patient acute dialysis facility, we care for our patients at our three outpatient hemodialysis centers.and our peritoneal dialysis unit.
Our educational programs are tailored for medical students, residents and practicing physicians, and the graduates of our renal fellowship program are placed in both academic and clinical settings at a national and international level.
The research programs of the Section of Nephrology encompass a broad spectrum from basic cellular physiology and molecular biology to patient-oriented clinical research in human physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology and outcomes research.
