Temple University Hospital Ranked Among Best in America for Pulmonology by US News & World Report
US News & World Report has once again ranked Temple University Hospital as one of the nation's top hospitals for pulmonology. Temple University Hospital is home to the Temple Lung Center and was one of 152 medical centers from across the country that were evaluated in a range of healthcare specialties for the publication's 2010-11 "Best Hospitals" issue.
"It is an honor to be recognized by US News & World Report," says Gerard J. Criner, MD, Director of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Temple University School of Medicine. "These rankings are a testament to Temple Lung Center's commitment to improving and extending the lives of all patients with respiratory illnesses. Here, even patients with particularly challenging cases benefit from the cutting-edge clinical care and research that we offer."
"The US News & World Report rankings highlight the tremendous work that is taking place at Temple University Hospital and Temple Lung Center," says Sandra Gomberg, RN, MSN, Chief Executive Officer of Temple University Hospital. "It is an honor to be recognized among many of the nation's most prestigious healthcare organizations."
The Temple Lung Center is one of the nation's largest referral centers for lung disease. Every year, more than 9,000 patients representing all forms of respiratory disorders come to be treated by Temple's renowned multidisciplinary teams of experts. Temple is particularly noted for its specialized programs for advanced Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, respiratory failure and lung transplantation. Currently, more than 25 clinical trials are underway to investigate new therapies for COPD, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Temple is also a leading clinical site in multiple NIH-sponsored trials such as the Long Term Oxygen Treatment Trial, COPD Genetic and Epidemiology Study, and the COPD Clinical Research Network.
As one of the most active pulmonary research programs in the nation, Temple has participated in more than 100 clinical trials in the past decade in COPD, IPF, pulmonary hypertension, sarcoidosis, respiratory failure and emphysema. It is nationally renowned for its superior outcomes, particularly in the areas of mechanical-ventilation, pulmonary fibrosis, COPD, emphysema and respiratory failure.
Temple lung doctors have authored over 250 papers in respiratory and related diseases in the past three years, and have recently published the second edition of their highly regarded textbook on critical care medicine.
"Providing clinical care, education and conducting research in so many patients at all stages of disease helps our doctors and surgeons hone a clinical expertise – a very specialized knowledge built on years of experience – that gives all our patients the absolute best chance for getting the treatment and care that helps them feel better and live longer," says Dr. Criner. "It also provides a platform for the very best in resident and student education."
