Trauma Registry

Trauma Registry

The trauma registry is an integral component of the trauma program. It is utilized to abstract concurrent and retrospective data for analysis, provide trending data, generate standard and ad hoc reports, and maintain a trauma dashboard. It also provides essential support for the research activities, the accreditation/verification process, compliance with clinical management guidelines, the identification of clinical and trauma system issues and supporting trauma performance improvement activities.

There is daily interaction between the trauma clinical staff and the trauma registry staff. The purpose of this interaction is to verify and ensure accurate clinical data. This enables the trauma registry to submit patient information to the state's trauma databank within 42 days of the patient's discharge from the hospital.

Registry staff maintains quality and consistency of data abstraction through the inter-rater reliability process. This requires all of the registrars to independently review the same medical record and then collectively review the data points. Any variance is reviewed and discussed to make sure all of the data points are accurate. All data points and definitions must meet the criteria established by Pennsylvania Trauma Outcomes Study Manual.

The trauma registry staff reviews approximately 2,600 trauma medical records each year. This process includes reviewing and abstracting all aspects of clinical care, starting with pre-hospital and ending with patient discharge. Our three full-time trauma registrars review medical records, run standard and ad hoc reports, and assist in the continued development of the trauma program and trauma registry at Temple University Hospital.
